Maariyah Patel
Fine artist researching ways of merging textiles and technologyI would describe myself as a textiles artist who gravitates to forms and materials that have touch/sensory stimulation. As a recent UCLan Fine Art graduate, I am in the stages of further developing my practise through research. I currently focus on how textiles and 3D printing can work in tandem with one another to create a sense of balance and strength. Each process of making requires focus and repetitive movement which helps to create a meditative state. My practise is representative of handcrafting and the positive impact it can have on mental health.
As I progress in research, I would like to expand my lines of inquiry by analysing how my Indian Heritage and religious upbringing has impacted my sense of identity. As material and fabrics are highly imbedded in my culture, especially during religious events, I feel it is the perfect next stage to elevate my artwork. This is something I would hope to achieve by applying to residencies, which is my next step in career progression.
Beyond this, I would also describe myself as a hobby crafter who knits, crochets and sews. I am willing to try anything new, thus feeling like I collect hobbies along the way!
